Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

England opener Zak Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements from skipper Ben Stokes about the dressing room not being "weak men".

The all-rounder made those words in several interviews in the wake of his team's defeat in the second Ashes versus the Australians previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where England now face defeat with a match to spare, Stokes stated he had let his sentiment to "drift around" among the playing group.

"I've done the necessary discussions over the past two days that I required," remarked Stokes.

But, after the opener made a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," he added.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

The captain issued his "weak men" observation subsequent to his side were beaten in Brisbane to go two matches behind.

The England squad afterwards went on a break to Noosa between the second and the upcoming matches.

Before the Adelaide contest, Stokes said his team had held "raw" talks and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their battle to remain alive in the Ashes battle.

Yet, the Kent batsman stated the guidance from Stokes and head coach McCullum had remained in line with their previous three years in charge.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," said the opener. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do something special going into this game."

Australia On the Verge of Historic Series Victory

Crawley's dismissal on day four was part of a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side 207-6 in pursuit of a notional target of 435 runs.

Consequently, Australia require just four more wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an unassailable three-nil lead after three matches played.

Defeat will extend England's drought in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth straight away Ashes series defeat.

The current battle will be completed in only 11 days of cricket – with England fell the first two Tests in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when the Australians sealed victory in England in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been determined so quickly. The hosts have also won in eleven days on two other instances in the modern era.

"It's disappointing," admitted Crawley. "We came here to regain the Ashes and we're facing elimination at this point."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we will definitely view it like that," Crawley added.

"It's been tough. They're a very, very good side. It was always going to be hard coming here to face them. They entered as the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Pope's Place In Question

While Crawley's innings in Adelaide probably answers questions about his immediate future in the side, Pope appears under threat for his position in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 runs in the team's second knock on Saturday, extending his poor record against Australia.

In 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and averages just 17.62.

Only one other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

But, the opener said any notion his teammate is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know of his considerable talent," said Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year if I'm honest."

"He has produced some really good knocks. It is noise from the outside. There's no discussion like that regarding Pope amongst the players," he finished.
